As the capital city of Mauritania, Nouakchott is the major entry hub for travelers coming to Mauritania. Nouakchott experiences a large population influx in the 1980’s after an extended drought forced many nomads from the desert to the capital. This forced the government to build many shelters and add infrastructure to support the newly arriving nomads. Nouakchott is home to some popular attractions like the fish market, capital market, the largest camel market in the country, many mosques, embassies, and the nation’s football stadium.
